Governance and Organizational Structure
AM is an African continental body that has been set up to monitor and advocate for development funding, commitment and delivery for greater results at the grassroots. As the head office in Cape Town South Africa, the African Monitor has been registered as a Trust under South African Trust law. Overall organizational set-up
The organizational structure of the AM reflects and is based on the functions of the AM as a continental body; serving Africa, working in partnership with civil society, public and private institutions; as well as interfacing with international development organizations.
The overall structure of the AM evolves in an incremental but timely manner, taking into account the urgency for some of the tasks of the AM.
Presented, below, are key aspects for the AM organizational structure:
- The AM Head office, located in South Africa (Cape Town). The AM Head office is already established and has increased staffing. It is based on the principle of a modest staffing level - with incremental strengthening foreseen based on the evolution of workload and competency/work content needs that are emerging.
- An AM office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (to liaise closely with the African Union, other African regional entities and country representatives based there, the Economic Commission for Africa, and others.
- AM sub-regional presence (units and eventually full-fledged offices) in each sub-region of Africa (as recognized by the African Union) i.e. West Africa, Central Africa, Eastern Africa, Southern Africa, North Africa. The AM sub-regional presence will be co-located, where appropriate, with the existing sub-regional organizations (e.g. ECOWAS, SADC etc)
- Focal Points: A system of Focal point organizations is continuously being developed to facilitate information sharing and nurture the development of close working systems with cross-sections of the following key groups for AM’s work:
- Faith Based organizations
- CSOs / NGOs
- Academia
- Diaspora
- Grassroots / CBOs
- Private Sector
- Women organizations
- Youth Organizations
