Anglican Archbishop to continue to uplift Africa

23 September 2007

Retiring Archbishop of Cape Town, Njongonkulu Ndungane, has vowed to continue his work of nation building and contributing to the development of the continent through the African Monitor. The body seeks to hold leaders in Africa accountable to their foreign donors.

Ndungane says the past eleven years has been a joyous period of his life. He says he hopes that in the near future women will also be considered for the highest position to lead the Anglican Church.

“No-one can retire from God you know because we still have other things to do as you are aware I have the African Monitor, which is seeking to monitor development in the continent and in partnership with government. I have been charged with the whole programme of restoration of historic schools together with those schools that were in the forefront of the struggle so it’s a joy to be of service to the nation and our continent,” said Ndungane.

The chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Brigalia Bam, praised the outgoing Anglican Archbishop for his commitment to ensuring that women were appointed in decision-making bodies of the church.
