About Us

Strategic Focus

The African Monitor (AM) is positioning itself as a catalyst among stakeholders engaged in development of the continent in order to facilitate a dialogue that will accelerate the rate of development in Africa. The AM will monitor the delivery of promises by donor and African governments, as well as programme effectiveness at grassroots level in order to advocate for accelerated delivery and programme effectiveness based on evidence from the ground. The AM will be a source of information to all stakeholders and a catalyst for debate.

Governance and Organizational Structure

AM is an African continental body that has been set up to monitor and advocate for development funding, commitment and delivery for greater results at the grassroots. As the head office in Cape Town South Africa, the African Monitor has been registered as a Trust under South African Trust law. The organization has applied for registration as a not-for-profit organization under the Department of Social Development in South Africa and will be applying for tax exemption status in South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States of America in year one.

Leadership Structures of the African Monitor

Founder and Chair of the Board

The African Monitor was founded by the Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane after extensive consultation within Africa and beyond, among faith communities and wider civil society, NGOs, governments and international agencies, think tanks, academia, and the private sector. In these consulations, he received overwhelming support for the African Monitor, with the recognition that there was no existing pan-African network that can provide such a catalyst across the sub-Saharan region, and taking a perspective across aid, trade, development and financial flows.

The Operating Model

African Monitor aims to drive changes at grassroots level by:

  • Ensuring that the voice of Africa’s people, their priorities and perspectives are heard in the corridors of power by developing and implementing a participatory monitoring model.

Vision, mission and objectives of African Monitor

The vision of African Monitor is a continent rapidly achieving its development potential whose people live dignified lives in a just society where basic needs are met, human rights upheld, and good governance entrenched.
